Athanasius of Alexandria was a fourth-century Christian theologian closely associated
with the council of Nicaea, along with its most famous term, homoousios (“same
substance”). His stalwart defense of the unity of Jesus Christ, the Word of God, with
God the Father has earned Athanasius the title “Father of Orthodoxy.” Facing five
different exiles, Athanasius never compromised his faith, and it is for this unwavering
commitment to the faith that we honor his name today.
